Plane crash survivors take “selfie of the year”

Survivors of a crash between an airplane and a firetruck have caused outrage after taking a selfie.

Two passengers, still covered in firefighting foam, smiled for the camera and shared the snap online with the caption: “When life gives you a second chance #latam”.

While the plane’s crew and passengers all survived, what they didn’t know was that two of the firefighters in the truck that collided with the plane at Peru’s Jorge Chavez International Airport had died.

Cuando la vida te da una segunda oportunidad #latam pic.twitter.com/Vd98Zu98Uo

— Enrique Varsi-Rospigliosi (@enriquevarsi) November 18, 2022

In light of this, the passengers sparked outrage online for smiling in the wake of the tragedy.

“I’ve seen it all now. Crash selfie. End of the internet,” one person tweeted.

“Nothing to be proud of, firefighters died,” another wrote in a popular aviation group on Facebook.

“Two firefighters die but sure, take a selfie and laugh,” a third commented.

Others shared memes criticising the photo, with one Twitter user sharing a photo of a woman posing in front of a wildfire and the caption, “Same vibes!”.

Cuando te convertis en un meme de 9gag pic.twitter.com/br7L8fdXIG

— 𝕸𝖆𝖚𝖗𝖔 𝕳. I’d be the happiest and most thankful person alive!”

A third noted that at the time very few people would have known there had been fatalities resulting from the crash, particularly if they were on the plane.

“In the moment they took the picture, only a few people knew that two firefighters had died. They thought it was a problem with the aeroplane,” they explained.

“Media took, at least, an hour and a half to report what really happened. Even firefighters from Lima didn’t know for the first hour. They just felt thankful for being alive.”

It also seems that the critics are in the minority, with the original post receiving more than 200,000 likes since it was posted on November 19, a day after the crash.

None of the 102 passengers or crew on-board the LATAM Airbus 280 at the time lost their lives in the incident, the cause of which is currently being investigated according to Jorge Chavez International Airport.

Footage taken by witnesses showed the plane taking off from the runway at full speed before colliding with the truck, also travelling at speed.

With damaged landing gear, the plane continued moving forward with its right side dragging along the runway and sending up a trail of sparks.

Todos los videos que me han llegado del accidente en el aeropuerto Jorge Chavez.#Latam pic.twitter.com/uS2d82ls7S

— 2023 VUELVO (@himselfsv) November 18, 2022

When it stopped, the rear of the plane was badly burned and a cloud of smoke escaped the aircraft.

According to security official Aurelio Orellana, a rescuer in the truck was also injured during the incident and is “in critical condition due to head trauma”.

Manuel van Oordt, the general manager of LATAM Peru, said he was surprised the firefighters were on the runway to begin with, given that the plane’s pilot hadn’t reported any anomalies.

“No emergency was reported in the flight, it was a flight that was in optimal conditions to take off, he had permission to take off, and he found a truck on the runway and we do not know what this truck was doing there,” he said at a press conference.

Image: Twitter

Fisherman declared a hero after Tanzanian crash efforts

After a plane crashed in Tanzania’s Lake Victoria on November 6, one fisherman who nearly lost his life trying to save the trapped pilots has spoken about his efforts.

The passenger plane was carrying 43 people when the pilots attempted to land at Bukoba airport after encountering problems and enduring bad weather.

Majaliwa Jackson, who was officially declared a hero and awarded 1 million Tanzanian shillings ($AU 665 or $NZ 725), told the BBC from hospital of the panic he felt when he saw the passenger plane approaching from the wrong direction before crashing into the lake.

Mr Jackson told the outlet that he rushed to the scene with three other fishermen, helping to open the rear door by smashing it with a rowing oar and allowing passengers seated towards the back of the plane to be rescued.

After moving to the front of the plane and diving into the water, Mr Jackson said he and one of the other pilots communicated by making signs through the cockpit window.

"He directed me to break the window screen. I emerged from the water and asked airport security, who had arrived, if they have any tools that we can use to smash the screen,” he said.

"They gave me an axe, but I was stopped by a man with a public announcement speaker from going down and smashing the screen. He said they were already in communication with the pilots and there was no water leakage in the cockpit.”

But, when he dived back in and waved goodbye to the pilot after he was stopped from smashing the screen, the pilot then indicated he wanted to be rescued.

Mr Jackson then attempted to pull the cockpit emergency door off by tying a rope from it to other boats, but he was knocked unconscious when the rope broke and struck him in the face.

“The next thing I knew I was here at the hospital,” he said.

In addition to his monetary reward, Mr Jackson was offered a job with the firefighting and rescue brigade, as well as training in rescue operations to sharpen his skills.

The pilots were among 19 confirmed fatalities from the crash.

Emergency crews used ropes to pull the plane, which had been completely submerged, closer to shore.

Airline Precision Air previously said that 26 passengers had been rescued and taken to hospital, but has since said there were only 24 survivors.

Kagera police commander William Mwampaghale said that the crash occurred at around 8.50am local time on Sunday.

“When the aircraft was about 100m mid-air, it encountered problems and bad weather. It was raining and the plane plunged into the water,” he said.

Tanzania’s Prime Minister Kassim Majaliwa has said an extensive investigation would be conducted to determine the cause of the crash, and that the government would cover the costs of funerals for the 19 victims.

Image: Getty Images

Anne Heche to be taken off life support

US actress Anne Heche will be taken off life support days after she was reported to be brain dead.

The decision comes after the 53-year-old was matched with an organ recipient, per CNN, in line with her wishes, after Heche was pulled out of her burning car, which she had driven into an LA home while driving 104 km/h on August 5.

Heche's publicist broke the news that the Six Days, Seven Nights star was "not expected to survive" on Friday, revealing that Heche had "suffered a severe anoxic brain injury".

“We have lost a bright light, a kind and most joyful soul, a loving mother, and a loyal friend,” her spokesperson told Page Six at the time.

“Anne will be deeply missed but she lives on through her beautiful sons, her iconic body of work, and her passionate advocacy.

“Her bravery for always standing in her truth, spreading her message of love and acceptance, will continue to have a lasting impact.”
<blockquote class="instagram-media" style="background: #FFF; What flight attendants aren’t allowed to do

The (job) rules of the sky

There are always rules and regulations to follow at various companies, and flight attendants are no exception. However, since being a flight attendant is no ordinary job and they’ve seen some of the craziest things when flying, it makes sense that they have some more interesting rules they need to abide by. From keeping piercings and tattoos to a minimum and not raising their voice, read on to find out the unusual rules flight attendants need to follow on the job.

They can’t sleep when working on a flight

It’s tempting for passengers to get some sleep when on a flight, but flight attendants don’t always have that option. “Flight attendants cannot ever sleep while working a flight unless it is a flight of a certain time duration,” says Kiki Ward, an airline flight attendant and author of The Essential Guide to Becoming a Flight Attendant. However, there are some exceptions, like on international or long-haul flights where flight attendants can go to a designated area to take a rest break.

They can’t have tongue piercings

Many women get their ears pierced at a young age. However, piercings can’t extend to other parts of the body, especially the tongue. According to the British Airways, its uniform standards require a simple, elegant look. A single ear piercing is allowed and only one set of round-shaped earrings must be worn. No other visible body piercings including tongue, tongue retainer, and nose studs are allowed.

They can’t have tattoos on most airlines

Most airlines require that tattoos aren’t visible on a flight attendant’s face, neck, hands or arms, and if a tattoo can be seen under the uniform, an undergarment should be worn to cover it up. Air New Zealand’s tattoo policy however allows employees to have Tā Moko (traditional Māori tattooing, often on the face) and non-offensive tattoos visible when wearing the uniform or normal business attire.

They can’t talk loudly in the cabin

In a confined space like a cabin, one conversation can be heard by people rows away. “There are personal behavioural guidelines that flight attendants are asked to follow,” says Ward, such as not talking to one another loudly in the cabin, the galleys or on jump seats about personal lives, work, etc because voices carry on aeroplanes. There isn’t a lot of privacy on an plane, so everyone should be courteous to those around them.

Although if you’re bumped from your flight, you may feel less than courteous in your interactions with airline staff.

Written by Madeline Wahl. How airplane crash investigations work

The fatal crash of Ethiopian Airlines Flight 302 has resulted in the worldwide grounding of Boeing 737 Max aircraft. Investigators are probing the crash and another like it that occurred less than five months earlier in Indonesia.

As an experienced airline pilot, aircraft accident investigator and professor of aviation, I know that such major crash investigations are an enormous effort often involving many countries’ governments and input from dozens of industry partners. The inquiries can take months of painstaking work. They often yield important insights that improve flight safety for everyone long into the future. Here’s how an investigation generally goes.

A massive collaboration

The accident investigation process is laid out by the standards and recommended practices in an international agreement called Annex 13 of the Convention on International Civil Aviation. That document outlines the process of gathering and analyzing information and drawing conclusions – including determining the causes of a crash and making safety recommendations.

The government of the country where the crash occurred takes the lead in the investigation. Also involved are investigators from the countries where the aircraft is registered, where the airline’s headquarters is, where the aircraft designer is based and where the aircraft was assembled. Countries where the engines or other major aircraft components were designed and assembled and those with citizens killed or seriously injured in the crash may also take part in the investigations.

The Ethiopian Airlines crash is under investigation by Ethiopian authorities, with the assistance of members of the U.S. National Transportation Safety Board. Other countries – including Kenya, France, Canada, China, Italy and the U.K., which all lost several citizens in the crash – may ask to be part of the process.

Ethiopian investigators can seek technical advice not only from participating countries’ representatives, such as the NTSB, but also from the companies that made the plane and its engines – in this case, Boeing and CFM international, respectively.

From emergency to inquiry

At the beginning of the inquiry, the investigator-in-charge, usually an investigator from the lead country’s aviation safety board, coordinates with local first responders to determine what hazards may be present at the crash site, and ensures safe access for investigators to visit the wreckage. Dangerous debris could include hazardous cargo, flammable or toxic materials and gases, sharp or heavy objects and pressurized equipment. Human remains or blood from injured victims may also pose dangers of disease, meaning investigators must protect themselves against viruses, bacteria or parasites.

The investigators on the scene take photos and videos of the wreckage and collect as much physical evidence as they can. They also conduct interviews with eyewitnesses and draw charts showing the debris field and any indications of how the aircraft hit the ground, such as the angle of impact, the distribution of debris and other details.

If parts of aircraft can be salvaged, they can be moved to a secure facility such as a hangar for wreckage reassembling. This can assist in determining missing or damaged components, and gaining a fuller idea of what happened.

Investigators also collect all the documents related the plane, its crew and its recent flights for forensic analysis.

An early priority is locating the crucial evidence in what are often called the plane’s “black boxes.” There are two kinds. The flight data recorders keep track of flight parameters such altitude, heading, instrument readings, power settings and flight control inputs. The cockpit voice recorders store all communications with the aircraft, including from air traffic controllers, and record any conversations among cockpit occupants and other audible cockpit sounds for the two hours leading up to the crash. All that information lets analysts reconstruct, and even create video simulations of, the last moments of the plane’s flight.

If either of those devices is damaged, authorities may ask the aircraft’s manufacturer to verify the salvaged data. Ethiopian investigators have asked for foreign help to analyze the black-box data. They originally asked Germany’s Federal Bureau of Aircraft Accident Investigation, but that agency said it didn’t have the technical know-how either. France’s Bureau of Enquiry and Analysis for Civil Aviation Safety, one of the most experienced crash investigation agencies in the world, is handling them instead.

In the early stages of an investigation, there are a lot of people working on different aspects of the inquiry all at once. As the preliminary lead accident investigator for the Ghanaian MI-17 helicopter crash in Adukrom, Ghana, in January 2007, I had to coordinate the securing of the crash site and do field interviews of witnesses while charting the debris and recovering the “black box” for further analysis.

Technical groups assemble

Other teams look at technical aspects that might have contributed in any way to the crash. They look at air traffic control activity and instructions, weather, human performance issues like crew experience and training, maintenance records, emergency response, safety equipment, aircraft performance and subsystems.

They may disassemble the crashed plane’s engines or other components and use flight simulators to attempt to experience what the pilots were dealing with. Analysts even study the metals used to make components to see how they should perform – to later compare that information with what actually happened during the crash.

A team also interviews any survivors, rescue personnel and subject-matter experts. Forensic teams and medical examiners will analyze victims’ remains to identify them for family members and to examine the injuries they suffered, and test for any drugs, alcohol or even carbon monoxide in their bodies that might have impaired their judgment or performance.

In some cases, especially high-profile crashes, investigators will hold public hearings, at which they gather more evidence and make public some of what they have found. This helps assure the public that the process is open and transparent, and is not covering up the responsibility of any guilty party.

Findings and conclusions

After they rigorously analyze all the data, devise, test and evaluate different hypotheses for what could have happened, the investigative team must determine causes and contributing factors. The goal is to identify anything – acts someone did (or didn’t) do, properties of a materials, gusts of wind, and so on – that had any role in the crash.

The report should include both immediate causes – such as active failures of pilots or maintenance crew – and underlying reasons, like insufficient training or pressure to rush through a task.

Within 30 days after the crash, the investigation team must release a preliminary report to the International Civil Aviation Organization, the U.N.-related global agency overseeing commercial air travel. A final report is normally expected to follow before a year has passed. In cases where a final report can’t be issued on that timeline, the team should release an interim report on each anniversary of the event, detailing the progress so far.

Improving safety

At any point during the investigation, investigators can recommend any preventative action that it has identified as necessary to improve flight safety. In the wake of the Lion Air crash, Boeing was reportedly working on a fix to a software system, but it didn’t get released before the Ethiopian Airlines crash.

The final report, including all the safety recommendations, is released by the country that conducted the investigation to the public and is aimed at improving aviation safety and not to apportion blame.<!-- Below is The Conversation's page counter tag. Why you should stay hydrated on the plane

The airplane cabin does strange things to your body – it can hurt your sinuses, dull your taste buds, make your skin flaky and even induce nosebleeds at times.

These problems all have the same root: Dryness.

A 2013 study by the University of Palermo found that the humidity levels on a variety of aircrafts – including Boeing 767, Airbus A320 and A340 – range between 1.8 and 18.5 per cent. As the plane reaches higher altitudes, the atmosphere in the cabin grows increasingly dry, even drier than most deserts.

For comparison, the relative humidity in the Gobi Desert in May averages 23 per cent, while Maria Elena South – which is widely considered as the driest area of the hyper-arid Atacama Desert in Chile – holds a relative humidity of 17.3 per cent.

The dry cabin environment is indeed not ideal – according to the National Asthma Council of Australia, the ideal humidity to deter airborne viruses is between 30 and 50 per cent.

Staying hydrated is a great way to minimise the negative effects of low humidity such as skin sensitivities, exacerbated jet lag or increased susceptibility to illnesses.

So next time you get onboard, do not hesitate to ask the flight attendant for an extra bottle or two – your body needs it.

“Very poor taste”: Airline slammed after morbid Twitter gaffe

An airline has had to apologise to the public after tweeting a grim statistic as a part of a “Tuesday Trivia” promotion.

The airline tweeted statistics about the likelihood of a passenger dying during a crash based on their seating assignment.

“According to data studies by Time, the fatality rate for the seats in the middle of the plane is the highest.

“However, the fatality rate for the seats in the front is marginally lesser and is least for seats at the rear third of a plane,” the tweet said.

There was an image of an aircraft seat accompanying the tweet as well as the message: “Seats at the back of a plane are the safest!”.

Many twitter users responded in droves, saying that the tweet was inappropriate.

KLM India removed the tweet and replaced it with an apology.

We would like to sincerely apologise for a recent update. Passengers shocked as plane starts leaking after massive storm

A couple who was travelling with British Airways were left terrified after they realised their plane was leaking before their journey home.

The eight-hour flight home started off easy enough before the duo realised that the emergency exit door was leaking water.

The couple had booked the seats for the extra leg room and were worried that the door wasn’t sealed properly due to the excess of water.

Nicola Agius explained to Sun Online Travel: “I was on the flight home from Orlando which was already delayed due to a huge thunderstorm.

“As we took our seats together in the emergency exit, I realised the plane started to leak. Water was literally gushing out of the door.”

Nicola took a video of the incident and said that staff came over to inspect it.

“I have a fear of flying at the best of times. The fact that none of the staff noticed the door was leaking made me even more nervous.

“The staff said it was normal, but I’ve never heard of a plane leaking before.

“I don’t understand why five air hostesses were gathered around with the pilot if it was completely normal.”

The crew mopped up the area with blankets and as the plane was empty, Nicola and her husband were able to move seats.

“We did take off and land safely, but it was scary, and I’ve never seen that before. It was just so terrifying.

“No wonder they have life vests on-board!”

A British Airways spokesman explained that the leaking was normal given the rough conditions.

“Although rare, this is normal when an aircraft is in a depressurised state when on the ground in very bad weather.

“The safety and security of our customers is our top priority, and we would not operate a flight unless it was safe to do so.”

Plane seat etiquette: Who gets the armrest?

When it comes to plane etiquette, the unspoken rules and courtesies can be quite confusing. With narrowing seats and shrinking legroom in airplanes, the issue of personal space has become more contentious among passengers.

One of the common sources of air rage cases between cabin mates is the armrest. In 2017, a man and a woman reportedly got into a screaming match in a Monarch Airlines flight from London to Malaga over an armrest between the aisle and middle seats. Last year, a woman posted a video on Twitter of her seatmate on an American Airlines flight who was allegedly "making an active scene" over their arms touching. The video went viral with more than 453,000 views.

So, who should have the right to the armrest? While there are no hard and fast rules, there are some customs that many deem fairer than others.

Most experts believe the middle seat should have both armrests. "The person seated at the window seat has their own armrest and wall, along with the person seated in the aisle seat – they also have a little more leg room," Zarife Hardy, director of the Australian School of Etiquette told 9Honey Travel.

"So, the person or people seated in the middle generally get the armrests first … However, let's keep it fair and just wait to see how it casually and politely happens."

Flight attendant Jacqueline Marie shared the sentiment. "I one hundred percent believe the middle seat has the right to both armrests," she told The Points Guy.

"I view the armrests as boundary lines but, shockingly, as a flight attendant I have never been asked to fix a dispute regarding seat space. But you know the sad thing? I honestly feel like many of those who get stuck in the middle just hope for a peaceful flight and they avoid confrontation, even if it means they will not be as comfortable."

According to Christopher Elliott, journalist and co-founder of advocacy group Travelers United, the armrests are still a shared space – but the middle seat should have priority.

"If you're sitting in a window or aisle seat, the middle seat passenger gets to put his arms down first," he wrote on the Washington Post. "If there's room left over, great. If not, it belongs to the middle seat passenger."

When I decided to take a picture & video to document the incident, I deplaned, picked up my bag, and boarded the shuttle. While I'm on the shuttle, this woman LIED that I assaulted her and the @AmericanAir flight attendant called the cops to remove me from the shuttle bus. pic.twitter.com/czMyxkQVQ7
— The High Priestess of Black Joy (@AmberJPhillips) April 27, 2018

But what about situations like the woman on the American Airlines flight faced, when we feel like a seatmate has invaded our space?

Gary Leff, co-founder of InsideFlyer.com suggested to observe the situation. If there is another empty seat in the cabin, you can ask a flight attendant discreetly if you can move – however, this scenario is unlikely to happen on a crowded flight.

"If your seatmate could easily take up less space, try to start a polite conversation and mention that you’d appreciate some of the armrest," said Leff.

However, if they unwillingly take up more space due to their body size, Leff suggested there is not much that you can do.

"The only time to enlist the help of the flight attendant is as a last resort. A flight attendant isn't going to stay by your seat through the flight to monitor your seatmate's behaviour. But if the person is clearly abusive, getting it on record with the crew can be a prophylactic measure."

Have you ever dealt with armrest problems on the plane? Family booted off plane due to offensive body odour

Jennie and Yossi Adler, as well as their 19-month-old daughter were escorted from their flight from Miami to Detroit after fellow passengers made complaints about their body odour.

Yossi explained to Local 10 News Miami:

"All of a sudden, as soon as they took us off, they closed the gate and then they said, 'Sorry, sir, some people complained you had body odour and we're not letting you back on’."

Despite claims from airline staff, the family were left without their possessions that were already on the flight. Jennie said:

"They have our car seat, stroller, everything,".

The airline carrier, American Airlines, were quick to address the issue, with a statement to Local 10 News Miami, saying:

"Mr. Adler and his wife were removed from the flight when several passengers complained about their body odour," the statement said.

"They have been booked into a hotel for the night and given meal vouchers. They have been rebooked on a flight Thursday."

Despite the family getting home safe on a later date, they’re still unhappy with the explanation from the airline.

"We stopped several people in the airport and, it's embarrassing, but we asked them, 'Do you think we smell? Because we just got kicked off a plane for smelling’," said Jennie.

“I want them to own up to what really happened and to tell me the truth,” said Yossi. “What was it?”

Have you seen something like this on your flight?
